Americans are funny. We tend to celebrate other nations holidays by drinking and partying in honor of them. I mean, take Saint Patrick’s Day. We use it as an excuse to get really drunk at our favorite Irish pub and wear green shirts that say “Kiss me I’m Irish” even when we may be only 1/16th of Irish decent. Well my friends, Cinco de Mayo is no different. Every fifth of May, Americans everywhere take out our Chevy’s sombreros, stock up on tequila and head out to bars for our favorite happy hour to drink margaritas and eat tacos! Now we at OUTNSD love Cinco de Mayo, but lets take a second to figure out why we all love to celebrate this Mexican holiday so much. Contrary to what many tend to believe, Cinco de Mayo is NOT the Mexican independence day. Okay, so why is it important? Its important because on the morning of May 5, 1862 4,000 savage Mexican soldiers dominated the 8,000 French and traitor Mexican army. This was truly amazing because under Napoleon’s reign the French army had not been defeated in 50 years, so they basically thought they were invincible. Now, because the French suffered such a loss it left them unable to supply the U.S. Confederates (who were in our Civil War) for another year and Union forces came to the aide of Mexico to make sure they were able to clear the French out. Well, we all know how the Civil War ended and maybe, just maybe, the battle on Cinco de Mayo had something to do with that. Since the Union forces and Mexico came together in the 1800′s, Mexico has returned the favor by fighting with us after Pearl Harbor and more recently they tried to help out in the Persian Gulf War. Let’s just say Mexico remembers who their buddies are! So, maybe that is why America feels such a strong relationship to party at the happy hours on Cinco de Mayo and play Mexican for a day; the two countries came together in a time of stress and helped pull through to victory. I would definitely drink to that! No need to feel like you are partying for no reason on the fifth of May this year, America actually has a lot to do with this holiday! All that being said please let OUTNSD help you celebrate whether you are hitting the bars or partying at home, here are some tips:
